February 12 1936

Zurich, Switzerland

Rachmaninoff's role: Solo Pianist

Notes: While Satina indicates that program details are not clear in regard to the Liszt Hungarian Rhapsody, it is likely to have been no. 11 in A minor, given the frequency with which Rachmaninoff performed it at the time. March 3 1936

March 5 1936

Oxford, England

Notes: No details. However, Satina writes that the program was probably either as Rachmaninoff played in London on March 7, or in Leeds on March 24. Yet from the reviews, the program in London appears to have been similar to Leeds. Her notes also state that the details sent ‘from England by Mr Tillett contain correct programs but INCORRECT in respect of the cities in which they were played.’ She further states that she noticed the problem by checking newspaper reviews of concerts. LoC, Sergei Rachmaninoff Archive, ML31.R33, Papers of Sophie Satin, boxes 82-89.

March 7 1936

London, England
Queen’s Hall

Rachmaninoff's role: Solo Pianist

Notes: Satina believed that she had a correct program on this date, featuring Bach-Tausig, Beethoven's Sonata in D major, op. 10, no. 3, and Chopin's B flat minor sonata. However the attached reviews indicate this was incorrect. Rather, the program appears to have been similar to what was played in Vienna on February 26 and in Paris on March 3, and in Leeds on March 24. The exact program that was played will likely remain unknown until a more complete review, or image of the program, can be located. For now, it has partially been reconstructed from the reviews. LoC, Sergei Rachmaninoff Archive, ML31.R33, Papers of Sophie Satin, boxes 82-89.

March 10 1936

Birmingham, England
Town Hall

Notes: Satina wrote that the program was probably either as Rachmaninoff played in London on March 7, or in Leeds on March 24. The attached reviews indicate it was the latter, and on the basis of these the program has partially been reconstructed. LoC, Sergei Rachmaninoff Archive, ML31.R33, Papers of Sophie Satin, boxes 82-89.

March 19 1936

Sheffield, England
City Hall

Notes: Satina was unable to confirm details for this concert, indicating that correspondence from Mr Tillet in London had incorrect information. However, the program can largely be reconstructed from a review in the Sheffield Independent on March 20, although the works by Liszt remain unknown at present. LoC, Sergei Rachmaninoff Archive, ML31.R33, Papers of Sophie Satin, boxes 82-89.

March 21 1936

Bristol, England
Colston Hall

Notes: Satina was unable to find details for this concert, however the program can be partially reconstructed from a review in the Western Daily Press on March 23. Given the similarity to programs from the previous year, it seems possible that Scriabin's Poème and Medtner's Fairytale were also played in the second half, despite not being mentioned in the review. LoC, Sergei Rachmaninoff Archive, ML31.R33, Papers of Sophie Satin, boxes 82-89.

March 24 1936

Leeds, England
Town Hall

Rachmaninoff's role: Solo Pianist

Notes: Satina recorded that Liszt's Liebestraum no. 3 was the first work in the final set, and that Gnomenreigen closed it, however the first is not noted in an otherwise very detailed review in the Yorkshire Evening Post on March 25, while the final work is indicated as the Hungarian Rhapsody. LoC, Sergei Rachmaninoff Archive, ML31.R33, Papers of Sophie Satin, boxes 82-89.

March 25 1936

Newcastle, England
City Hall

Rachmaninoff's role: Solo Pianist

Notes: Satina writes that the program was probably either as Rachmaninoff played in London on March 7, or in Leeds on March 24. The attached press clipping from the Evening Chronicle indicates it was to be the latter, with the inclusion of Beethoven's 32 Variations, three sonatas by Scarlatti, Chopin's B minor sonata, and 'works' by Rachmaninoff and Liszt. LoC, Sergei Rachmaninoff Archive, ML31.R33, Papers of Sophie Satin, boxes 82-89.

Notes: While Satina was unable to find any details for this concert, Stuart Campbell in 'The Russian Paris of Rachmaninoff' (2013), p. 86, indicates works by Chopin, Liszt and Rachmaninoff were played. An introductory speech about the composer's work was given by Gerard Bauer. LoC, Sergei Rachmaninoff Archive, ML31.R33, Papers of Sophie Satin, boxes 82-89.

Notes: Satina noted that this concert was given in the evening. A separate concert in the afternoon, which opened the Sheffield Festival, included a performance of Rachmaninoff’s The Bells, however the composer did not take part in that concert. A press clipping in the Sheffield Independent indicates Rachmaninoff was among the audience. LoC, Sergei Rachmaninoff Archive, ML31.R33, Papers of Sophie Satin, boxes 82-89.
